Market participants saw strong performance in fixed income assets during the month of November as election angst in the U.S. dissipated and the economic outlook became clearer. U.S. Treasuries and corporate credit performed well, with the U.S. Aggregate Index finishing the month up 0.98%.

Following election day, uncertainty regarding which candidate won seeped into the bond market, with ten-year yields falling approximately 14 bps on November 4th. However, as it became more evident that Joe Biden would be the next President of the United States, the ten-year rose 19 bps over the ensuing six days. While the benchmark rate trended lower for the rest of the month and closed at roughly the same level it did in October, it is becoming increasingly evident that market participants are pricing in higher inflation. Throughout November, the ten-year breakeven inflation increased an additional 7 bps, while ten-year real yields fell approximately 9 bps, pushing real yields further into negative territory.

Both investment grade and high yield US corporate credit finished the month positive, with benchmark indices tracking each sector rising 2.79% and 3.96%, respectively. Credit spreads continued to tighten for both sectors as well, with investment grade spreads approaching their five-year lows. In fact, investment grade spreads, as measured by the Bloomberg Barclays US Corporate Index, are at lower levels now than they were in almost all of 2018 and 2019. One concern that may be on fixed income investors’ minds is how attractive investment grade credit is with spreads this low. If interest rates continue to move higher, and spreads are at levels considered “fairly valued”, any further decrease in spreads may not offset moves in interest rates.
