The S&P 500 Index registered its third consecutive monthly gain in January with a return of 1.68%. However, market breadth was poor as the S&P 400 Mid Cap and S&P 600 Small Cap indexes were negative at -1.71% and -3.79%, respectively. Only 11 of the 21 trading days were positive, with all three benchmarks selling down the final two days of the month. Just 5 of 11 economic sectors were positive in January after two months when Energy was the only down sector. Growth stocks were in favor and easily beat value during January.

After a significant improvement in breadth off the October 2023 low, market concentration returned in January. Experienced investors are aware that the S&P 500 is not an equally weighted index. Rising markets depend heavily on the largest stocks in the index but are in a more sustainable trend if most stocks are also rising. The record high for the S&P 500 was reached on January 29th, while nearly half the stocks in the index were down for the month. The largest stocks in the index are also the most expensive, as measured by the price-to-earnings ratio, which is illustrated in the chart below. Better outcomes are likely when stocks are more correlated in returns and is a market dynamic worth watching.

International equity bourses reflected the pattern of the broader U.S. market in producing mixed results. The S&P Global BMI ex-U.S. January return was -1.13%. The S&P Developed BMI ex-U.S. Index and S&P Emerging Markets Index returns in January were -.31% and -3.46% respectively. The dollar increased by 2.07% and dampened international returns. As we detailed in prior summaries, the technology sector's outperformance is correlated with lagging returns of international markets as this sector is less heavily represented in international market indexes than in the S&P 500.

Index performance used throughout is intended to illustrate historical market trends and performance. Indexes are managed and do not incur investment management fees. An investor is unable to invest in an index. Their performance does not reflect the expenses associated with the management of an actual portfolio.
